Recently, a black transgender woman named Merci Mack was killed in Dallas, which is close to my hometown. Texas is the state with the highest number of transgender people who are victims of murder. I often process pain through art, so I made this song as a means of processing my own sorrow and grief regarding this marginalized community who is experiencing profoundly disturbing oppression and violence. I wanted to offer this song as a type of musical prayer for them during this tumultuous and violent time. There's still a lot of work I need to do when it comes to educating myself about this issue. But I think we can all agree that, whatever one thinks about transgender people, their lives matter, murder is inexcusable, and we must be committed to loving others in humility. The last section is from Mister Rogers' poem/song "It's You I Like." We need that poem's kind of love right now.
