Being born in the mid-90s, I grew up in the shadow of the ‘Satanic Panic.’ It was a cultural phenomenon from the 80s to 90s in which society — especially Christians, but also the secular media and even some psychiatrists — was terrified that Satan worshipers were attempting warp the minds of children and teenagers through Dungeons and Dragons, rock music, horror movies, and Halloween.

However, being an imaginative and somewhat artistic child, I loved Halloween season. I loved the decorations, the TV cartoon specials, and the costumes most of all. The transcendent wonder I experienced every year during trick or treating still lingers with me to this day.

Growing up in an evangelical church community, my childhood was the experience of a dichotomy between a deep love for the theatrics of Halloween and the message from many church members that the forces of Satan were lurking behind the dark imagery. We were told instead to in attend “fall festivals” on church grounds, which would keep us from the dangers of Halloween.

Since my childhood, the nature of my religious faith has changed, though I still remain a Christian. This album is an attempt to capture the tensions between the living in shadow of the satanic panic, being a Christian, and loving Halloween. Though it’s meant for people of all faiths or none at all.
